In a radar system, the radar range is the maximum distance (Rmax) beyond which the target/object can no longer be detected and correctly processed.

The radar equation shows that the radar range Rmax (i.e., maximum detection range) is the function of antenna gain, aperture area, transmitted power, minimum detectable echo signal power level (W), and radar cross-section area (sqr Mtrs).

What is a Radar range?

In a radar system, the radar range is the maximum distance (Rmax) beyond which the target/object can no longer be detected and analyzed i.e., at this distance, the received echo signal by the radar receiver is minimum or cannot be detected.

Determining radar range is important not only for predicting the range performance of a radar but also to act as a focus for radar design and for calculating the factors that affect radar performance.

How to calculate the radar range?

The following formula is used to calculate the radar range:

Rmax = Radar range in m/Km/miles

Pt = Transmitted power from radar in Watts/mW/dBm/dBw

G = Antenna gain (linear)

Ae = Antenna aperture in m2

S = Radar Cross-section sq Mtrs

λ = Wavelength in m/nm/µm/Angstrom

Pmin = Minimum detectable signal in dBm/Watts
